Beautiful and long-widowed immigrant Ma (Chen, Americanese) finds herself pregnant and kicked out of the house she shares with her father in the insular, Chinese-populated borough of Queens. She ends up at daughter Wilhelmina's doorstep in Manhattan. A workaholic surgeon, Wilhelmina (Krusiec, Live!) takes her in and soon struggles to fulfill her role as dutiful daughter. Wil soon meets and falls in love with ballet dancer Vivian. Ma tries to get her life back on track and make sense of her daughter's homosexuality. Wil and Vivian eventually decide that to help Wil's mother save face - by finding her a suitor - is of greater importance than worrying about what the Chinese-American community think of their relationship. First time filmmaker Alice Wu manages to tackle the issues of homosexuality and age-old traditions with respect, compassion, and a sense of humor.
